SHEBOYGAN – A list of the top 100 spas of 2016 includes two right here in Sheboygan County.
Aspira Spa, located inside the Osthoff Resort on the shores of Elkhart Lake, was named the #2 Spa in America and the #1 Resort/Lake Spa by Spas of America in its annual ranking of the Top 100 Spas of 2016.
Destination Kohler’s Waters Spa, located in the Carriage House of the American Club, was #77 on the list of top spas.
In a press release, the Osthoff Resort said it was “no surprise” Aspira clinched the #2 spot, “since nature, specifically the healing waters of Elkhart Lake, are at the center of the spa’s mission, environment, and signature treatments.”
When developing signature treatments at Aspira, General Manager Lola Roeh said she aims to highlight the lake’s healing history.
“I’ve always felt strongly about offering treatments that have a special connection to the land and the water,” she said.
Among services that utilize the natural surroundings of Elkhart Lake, the Cedars Massage uses cedar boughs harvested from trees along the shoreline harvested by Aspira’s massage therapists, while the Sacred Waters Massage uses doe-skin pouches filled with warmed water from the lake placed on chakra points throughout the body.
The Kohler Waters Spa, one of only 48 five-star spas worldwide, also utilizes the water-inspired treatments to sooth the body and mind.
“Kohler Waters Spa is honored to be included in the Spas of America annual rankings, as the only Forbes Five-Star rated spa in Wisconsin, we take great pride in offering innovative treatments and leading the industry in hydrotherapy experiences for our guests,” Garrett Mersberger, director of Kohler Waters Spa, said in an email.
Both spas offer services to locals not staying as guests at the resorts.
Spas of America, the No. 1 spa and wellness travel website, based its ranking on consumer behavior on its website.
The Top 100 Spas of 2016 list includes 66 spas from the United States, 28 spas from Canada, three from Mexico, two from Brazil and one from Turkey.
“North American spa and wellness consumers are continuing to focus on health, exercise and fitness experiences – especially in the outdoors,” Spas of America President Craig Oliver said in a press release. “Spa and wellness travel offers people a chance to take a step back, enjoy a slower pace and focus on what is truly important.”
